Here’s a quick post to update you on the latest cute critters in my neighborhood. Last night, we snapped some pics of some little fish that somehow managed to arrive in our little stream. Then, this morning, our resident doe and fawn came to visit. The fawn was very brave this morning, and came all the way up to the house, munching all the way.
A few days ago, while sitting around watching TV, we wondered why we were seeing all kinds of gnats and other miscellaneous small insects hovering around us. An eternity later (a couple minutes), we realized the patio door was open. Oops! No biggie. Gnats have lifespans measured in minutes, and we liberated the house from grasshoppers in just a short time more. We thought the episode was over…
Flash forward to this evening. After an enjoyable evening watching a movie, we prepared to head to bed. But, out of the corner of my eye, I thought I spotted another pesky grasshopper jumping from our ivy. Guess again! It was a cute little frog that must have been hiding in our overgrown tree of leaves since the weekend, gobbling up the remainder of the gnats. I swooped down, and picked him up…
After several minutes of admiring his little green cuteness, we decided it was time to let him go. So, out I went the door to somewhere he was sure to find lots of yummy things to eat, and lots of fun things to hop on and climb. But, after all his hopping protestations inside the house, he decided he’d rather keep hopping up my arm than jump out onto the grass. Finally, though, he desisted and jumped off into the night. But, while snapping a couple pictures of him running off, we noticed in the brief flashes of light that we had more company nearby!
Meet our little hoppy’s big brother, some sort of large toad! At least 4-5 inches in size, he might not set world records, but he was a definite elephant compared to our previous little friend. So, we had fun watching him hop away before we turned in for the night. What a fun way to end the day!
Every once in a while I get reminded how lucky I am to be living in rural Iowa. This evening was one of those days. While sitting in the living room, looking out the window, up came prancing a spotted fawn. And, a couple steps behind, up came the momma doe. After a couple minutes of browsing and munching away on random fresh shoots of this and that, they wandered back into the woods. It’s simple sights like this that make me smile and remember to myself that life is good.
